![]() Arguably the most important of these works was his invaluable The Origin of Family, Private Property and the State. After Marx died, Engels took over his papers, but also continued his own work. The greatest collaborations were The Communist Manifesto and The German Ideology. When he and Marx collaborated, they did so as equals. He met Karl Marx as a Young Hegelian, having already published works on his own and mastered multiple languages. Most importantly, however, Engels was a brilliant scholar and writer in his own right. That’s right, Friedrich Engels, the great communist, was a capitalist!. He later sold these businesses and was able to live quite comfortably off of his investments. Engels owned multiple textile and cotton factories in England and Germany. First, in the relationship between Marx and Engels, it was Engels who was the wealthy patron. This Batman and Robin schema is weird for a number of reasons. He is, of course, most famous for co-authoring The Communist Manifesto with his friend, Marx. He’s the side-kick standing in the shadow of the much greater and more prolific philosopher. ![]() When we think about Friedrich Engels, we often think of him as Robin to Karl Marx’s Batman. ![]()

It opens with a radio reporting that a gunman has opened fire in an old people’s care home – the latest in an epidemic of violence targeted at the elderly. Shot in natural light, in the present day, in almost real time and in an almost documentary style, Plan 75 slowly reels audiences in, focusing on the impact the scheme has on a small group of people across society as the horror builds. “It’s something we should think about,” another says equably to her friends, as they enjoy a dish of fruit together after a karaoke session. “My family will be so proud of me,” chirrups one elderly woman in an advert for the scheme. ![]() ![]() Morgan, Morris Nathanson, Ilse Nesbit, Leo Narducci, Howard Newman + Mika Seeger. But by that time, it’s too late, I’ve already gotten brain freeze. This isn’t a horrible story/treatment, but when you compare it with the some of the things Marvel is doing or some of the more adventurous output at DC (Snyder’s Batman, Swamp Thing, Animal Man) it just melts away like an ice cream cone left out in the sun. It would just shatter my view of him as a mediocre hack. If there’s something out there by Johns, that rates more than three stars, please don’t tell me. Why do a majority of DC’s New 52 titles get plotted with storylines that would seem quaint and dated back in 1990? One reason: According to the credits on this volume, Geoff Johns is/was (?) the creative brains behind much of DC’s output. Nightwing (formerly, Robin, the Boy Wonder) is supposed to be the light-hearted, quippy member of the Bats family, but even he’s worn down by this loose tie-in to the “Owls” storyline from the Batman titles. NIghtwing joins the circus looking for some sort of closure about his mom and dad getting blown up and instead is subjected to this freak show of a storyline. ![]() |
